The doll craftsmanship came from Beijing Opera and formed an industry of exquisite handwork since the opera was born in the 18th century.
This doll originates from an ancient masterwork of "The Peony Pavilion" as a role of beautiful young lady named Du Liniang, who dreamt that she had a secret rendezvous with one young under a plum tree beside the pavilion. Then she was haunted by memories of her dream lover and, after seeking the dream in vain, she felt ill and soon died of a broken heart. After her death, Du's spirit kept searching for the young. Her persistence won over the Judge of the Netherworld and she was allowed to be reincarnated.
Three years later, a young scholar stayed at the temple where Du was buried. He saw her portrait and felt familiat with her, then was calling her... the young lady came out of the picture. The couple lived happily thereafter :)
The doll comes with a square wooden base. There is an option to choose a display case with the doll to prevent dust.
